2003 BEDAN.............. ACHIEVERS AWARDS
It is intended to honor the many men and women who have made their distinct Bedan marks in the various areas of their respective lives, making a big difference in the pursuit of upholding the proud tradition of quality and excellence of San Beda College. These Bedan greats best epitomize and exemplify the Benedictine principles "Ora et Labora" and deserve the Bedan community's and the Filipino people's highest praise and appreciation. This years Bedan Achievers are: Basil C. Apostol, OSB (GS '72 / HS '76) is a humble and well-loved Benedictine priest who entered the Order of St. Benedict in 1979 and was ordained in 1986. He was High School and College Chaplain during his early years in San Beda College and Prefect of Postulants at the Abbey Church. He has always been very active in the affairs of both the San Beda and St. Benedict Alumni Association, raising valuable funds for both Benedictine schools and the alumni associations. In recognition of his selfless dedication and valuable services he has rendered to the school and the alumni association, and for serving as a role model to countless Bedans to also dedicate their lives unselfishly for the school and the alumni association, the San Beda Alumni Association awards him the Bedan Achiever for SY 2002-2003. Atty. Dominador "Jimmy" D. Buhain (GS '57 / HS '61) There are a number of Bedans who have achieved much in life but have maintained a low profile through the many years. One such Bedan is Jimmy, successful business leader and lawyer, outstanding father, and a highly revered publisher. Proud of his humble beginnings, he considers his being persevering and unwavering faith in God which made him succeeding life. Today, he is president Rex Book Store, Inc., one of the well-patronized book companies in the Philippines. He has received several citations for his outstanding achievements both as a professional and family man. For his life of service to the Philippine publishing industry, for his inspiring leadership in various executive positions he has held, and for embodying the Benedictine principle of "work and pray" at its best, the San Beda Alumni Association is proud to confer "The Bedan Achiever Award" on Atty. Dominador Buhain. Appointed recently as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Romeo Joven Callejo, Sr., has always been a proud Bedan and an outstanding law professor. His remarkable career in the Judiciary started with his appointment as Presiding Judge of Branch 49, RTC Manila. He was recipient of the Outstanding Judge (RTC) Award of the Year for 1990 and 1991.He was bestowed the same award in 1994 on the occasion of the 423rd Anniversary of Manila. In 1993, Justice Callejo received the Cayetano Arellano Award for Judicial Excellence which was chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Jose Feria. He was also recipient of the Bedan of the Century award during SBC's centennial in 2001. His appointment to the Court of Appeals was made in November 4, 1994. He was the Chairman of the Committee on Ethics and Member of the Commitment on the Revision of the Internal Rules of the Court of Appeals. He became the chairman of the 10th Division on April 13, 2002. Devoted to his continuing legal education, he attended various trainings in Australia as well as in the United States. He is the current Chairman of the Department of Criminal Law and a member of the Academic Council in the Philippine Judicial Academy. A living model of an honest public servant, Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte is responsible not only for restoring stable peace but also the business climate in the beautiful city of Davao. He became Representative of the First District of Davao from July 1998 to June 2001. He has been serving as city mayor of Davao since February 1988 until March 1998 and was re-elected for the same post after his one-term stint in Congress. |
In recognition of his exemplary service for the common good and for consistently exhibiting integrity, com petence and sound judgment in the course of his government services; and for embodying the Benedictine principles of ora et labora, as its best, the San Beda College Alumni Association confers on him the Bedan Achiever Award. Considered one of the pillars of the Philippine Movie Industry, Arsenio "Nick" Lizaso (HS '53) is a well-respected television/movie director in the mold of the late Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal and other high caliber movie industry leaders who have brought the local filmdom into a new era. A multi- awarded movie and TV director, Nick is best remembered for TV dramas which tackled social issues and promoted Fi lipino values, cultures and traditions. These popular TV dra mas included Balintataw, Salaghati and a legal drama series entitled Ipaglaban Mo. Nick was founding officer and mem ber of the Board of Governors of the Film Academy of the Philippines. He was a Fullbright-Hayes Grantee for theater arts, film and TV. Nick was also official delegate to the International Theater Institute Congress in London, Helsinki, and Istanbul, and became a member of the Philippine cultu ral mission to New York and Washington during the official state visit of President Corazon Aquino. He received a special award from the "Guardian of the Arts and Culture", a presti gious film body created by the city of Manila. For his signifi cant contributions to the advancement of Philippine television and cinema, the SBC Alumni Association awards him the Be dan Achiever for SY 2002-2003. Captain Gregorio S. Oca is presently President of the Associated Marine Officers and Seamen's Union of the Philippines; Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Manila International Ports and Terminal, Inc. and General Manager of Arastre Operator, South Harbor Terminal. His Maritime and Labor related professional affiliation include his being Presidential Consultant on Maritime Affairs of the Office of the President; an elected member of the International Labor Organization Joint Maritime Commission; Board Member of the International Transport Worker's Federation Executive Board; trustee of the Overseas Workers and Welfare Administration and Chairman of the Technical Committee on the OWWA Hospital Project. He received various citations from various sectors, significant of which were: the Lifetime Achievement Award given during the 4th LSM Pacific Management and Training Conference, a Distinguished Service Award from the Professional Regulations Commission and the New Filipino Award from the Office of the President.
In the accountancy, business and the industry sector, Eugenio R. Reyes (HS '37) is a well-respected figure. An Outstanding Bedan of the Century awardee, Reyes was instrumental in strengthening professionalism among public accountants during his term as Chairman of the Board of Accountancy. He also played a very important role in building SGV & Co. to what it has become today as the largest professional services firm in the century. Considered a true Bedan treasure, the SBC Alumni Association recognizes his outstanding accomplishments as an accountant and business leader, thus confers him the Bedan Achiever Award. Charles B. Rodriguez (GS '48 / HS '52), former President of the SBC Alumni Association (1978-79), is best remembered for being the founder and prime mover of the SBC Alumni Foundation. He is now based in Australia as a successful business entrepreneur. The SBC Alumni Association recognizes his important role in establishing the Alumni Foundation which is now a well-established alumni body with laudable project undertakings, aimed at bringing San Beda College to even greater heights, making it a true bastion for quality Catholic education in service to God and country. A highly successful business entrepreneur, Kishu D. Sehwani (GS '49 / HS '53 / BSC '57) occupied chairmanship and other sensitive positions in various establishments here and abroad. Among the companies which he spearheaded are Mark Food Corporation, American Key Products, and S. Henle, both based in New York, Com-Ind Insurance Agency and Sehwani, Inc. Kishu's credible performance in his profession comes not as a surprise to those who knew him as a young achiever: fourth placer in the 1957 CPA Board Exams, a be-medaled student and honor graduate in SBC High School, SBC-CAS and National Defense College where he took his masteral studies in National Security Administration. Kishu was a founding trustee of the SBC Alumni Foundation and former President of the Alumni Association. He took an active role in both the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong and San Juan North where he became president. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in the business and industry sector, as well as his exemplary inspiring leadership in various executive positions he has occupied, the SBC Alumni Association confers him the Bedan Achiever Award. |
